The Ball State University women's golf team concluded the Eastern Kentucky University Spring Invitational on Saturday finishing tied for fourth out of 14 teams. The Cardinals score of 977 was 55 shots behind the University of Toledo, who won the tournament with a team score of 922. Tammy Clelland of Toledo was the medalist with a three-round score of 224.
The Cardinals shot a first-round score of 320, a second-round of 322 and finished the tournament with a third-round score of 335. Senior Katie Sundberg led the team with a 240 and finished tied for 11th. Julie Harder finished right behind Sundberg and tied for 14th with a 241. Carmen Bodine posted a 249 to finish 33rd and Amber Uphaus finished with a 250 and tied for 34th. Chelsie Flannery, who was replacing Kallie Harrison, shot a 263 and tied for 73rd.
The Cardinals went into the tournament expecting to perform at a high level but were disappointed by their performance over the three-day event.
"We went into the tournament with high expectations," coach Katherine Mowat said. "We didn't put one round together with a lot of success. We could have done a lot better."
Conditions were best on Thursday when the tournament started and progressively got worse. Friday it was windy and still warm, but come Saturday the temperature had dropped, and it was windy and sleeting.
"No one in their right mind would choose to play golf on a day like yesterday." Mowat said,
Sundberg had hoped both the team and herself could have posted better scores on the course, as they are fairly familiar with it. She contributed some of the struggles to the poor playing conditions, but said the team did not play as well as they could have.
"We hoped to play better, in the past we played really well there." Sundberg said. "I didn't hit the ball too bad but I had mistakes around the green with putting and chipping that weren't caused by the weather."
The Cardinals will play another course the team is familiar with this weekend at the Illini Spring Classic at the Stone Creek Country Club in Urbana, Ill.
