UCS discovers security problem with passwords

University Computing Services discovered a security problem with Ball State's Interlibrary Loan Request System this week and recommend concerned students change their school passwords.

During a normal review of Web sites hosted by Ball State, UCS found that, for milliseconds, user names and passwords were passed to the company that runs ILLiad for user authentication, O'Neal Smitherman, vice president of information technology said.

While the information is deleted immediately and no problems have occurred because of this, the system has been taken down until the problem is fixed. Students can still request books, Arthur Hafner, dean of University Libraries said. The library is temporarily using the system they used before ILLiad.

Students can change their passwords at bsu.edu/password if they are worried about security.
