TRACK AND FIELD: Cards finish second at Miami Invitational

Ferguson victorious in 400-meter dash, breaks school record

The Ball State University women's track and field team earned runner-up honors this weekend at the Miami Invitational.

Competing with 16 other teams, the Cardinals scored a team total of 141 points, finishing behind the host Redhawks. The day was highlighted with three individual first-place honors.

Leading the way for Ball State was sophomore Voni Ferguson, who took home first-place accolades in the 400-meter dash, and broke a six-year-old school record. Her time of 53.94 bested Jada Phelps's time in 2000 of 53.97. Ferguson also finished second in the 200-meter dash (24.13).

Other individual first-place honorees included freshman Jeanne Roberts in the 100-meter dash (12.08) and senior Jennifer McCoy in the 100 hurdles (14.25).

Both Ball State relay teams picked up wins as well, as the 4x100 finished with a time of 45.82, while the 4x400 finished in a season best 3:46.51.

Coach Sue Parks said that although she was disappointed with lack of scoring in some events and the second-place finish, a few parts of the team showed improvement.

"We did not score in the distances, shot put, discus and pole vault and it is difficult to win a meet when you give up points in that many events," Parks said. "However, we made very good progress in certain event areas in this meet. The sprinters, hurdlers and horizontal jumpers did very well in this meet. We just need more production from the rest of the team."

Ball State splits its team next with half traveling to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Searay Relays, April 12-15 and while others travel to Walnut, Calif., for the Mt.
