THE LEFT SIDE OF THE COUCH: Papers, projects keep students out of sun

This Spring Semester has something I feel like I have never experienced before: the warm sun.

Ah, the warm and beautiful sun. With the rotation of seasons, the long-awaited spring has come back around.

However, like many other students, I still spend my time indoors reading, studying and looking at bright screens until the early hours of the morning.

With daylight-saving time in effect now for April, sunlight is still present until the evening hours.

Oh, the light, the beautiful light.

However, I am stuck in a library - or a dark room somewhere typing until my wrists cramp.

The final weeks of Fall Semester are much easier than those of Spring Semester. I can sit inside all day and write to my heart's content while it is snowing outside.

Yet, as soon as that warm breeze blows upon us in the spring, it becomes more difficult to concentrate on school - especially with the number of pages we have to write for classes.

Over the course of the next week, I will write a total of approximately 40 pages. And they will be the most difficult 40 pages of my life due to the nice, warm weather.

Headaches will become more common during the next two weeks. Everyone will begin to show signs of fatigue, sleep apnea and stress. It will become difficult to find motivation to carry out simple tasks because of the all-nighters we all will spend in the library and computer labs as we try to complete our work before May 6.

Even now, many of us are beginning to get writer's block. For instance, earlier this week, I was unable to think of the word "exclusive."

We are consuming more caffeine and junk food just to keep us going for another few days, hours or minutes.

While the next two weeks will usher in the most-appreciated summer for the thousands of students here at Ball State University, these weeks could cause us most of the stress in our lives - until we either return home or go back to our jobs or continue on with Summer Semester.

The sun does give us the opportunity to "get out and play." Still, the majority of us are sitting inside doing exactly what we should, and at the same time should not, do: study and strive on.

The way we strive for the goals of good grades and accomplishments will eventually cause our health's demise, along with physical and mental drains.

Finals are always hard on people, and this semester's will be the hardest for many of us. The longer we stay in school, the more difficult classes - and therefore finals - become. However, the recent time change has thrown off even the most seasoned of college students who are used to the routine of Indiana weather on Eastern Standard Time.

Still, we cannot let ourselves suffer the end-of-semester blues. We must persevere and continue to follow our dreams and goals.

Even though school is more difficult and life continually becomes more complicated, we cannot let ourselves get down and out because of the pressure that has been placed upon us.

So it is now time for us to take one collective breath in. And out. Now, let us dive in and work our way toward May 6 together.
