Students, faculty will walk in Relay for Life

30 teams will raise money for American Cancer Society

Junior Liz Hamilton hopes Relay for Life will firmly establish itself as a staple of Ball State University's annual events this year.

For the third year, Ball State and the Colleges Against Cancer will sponsor Relay for Life from 7 p.m. Friday until 7 a.m. Saturday on LaFollette Field. Approximately 30 teams of Ball State students, faculty and others are already registered for the event.

"We really want to spread the word to get more people involved next year and have it get bigger and bigger with every year," said Hamilton, president of Colleges Against Cancer and Relay for Life chairwoman. "And of course, we hope to contribute a great deal of money to the fight against cancer."

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's largest fundraiser, Hamilton said. Teams of eight to 15 people raise money during the school year until the relay in the spring, when all of the money goes toward cancer research, patient support and cancer education/awareness programs, she said.

According to the Colleges Against Cancer Web site, the program "allows college students, faculty and staff to work together to bring American Cancer Society programs and services to college communities nationwide."

Katie Geiman, freshman head of survivorship and part of the entertainment committee, said the event would have many activities, bands, DJs and food.

Hamilton said some of the activities at Relay for Life included various games, including some about cancer awareness, and an entertaining competition called the "Miss Relay" pageant. The event will also have socializing and activities to honor and remember those who have battled cancer.

Geiman said this is the first year she has been involved with Relay for Life. She said she wanted to get involved because she knew many people who passed away because of cancer.
