Storms rip through central Indiana

Power lines fell and fires burned across Muncie as high speed winds and heavy rain stormed through Indiana Sunday night.

At 11 p.m. city emergency personal reported at least six sets of downed power lines, including power lines near Liberty Street, where they were setting off a railroad track signal.

At Ball State University, campus police waited for a signal to set off the tornado sirens for the northern half of Muncie. Shift supervisor Dave Starkey said he had received several phone calls from residence hall directors looking for information but was unable to give them much more than could be found online.

Some students at Lafollette Hall moved downstairs to the basement when the inclement weather began, and residence hall directors and assistants began walk-throughs to inform students of the conditions.

The storms swept up from Terre Haute through Indianapolis and Delaware County and began dissapating a little after 11 p.m.

Marion County Emergency Management Director Jim White told Indianapolis television station WTHR there were unconfirmed reports of two tornado touchdowns in Marion County, but no injuries were reported. The storms came just two nights after an F2 tornado destroyed or heavily damaged about 40 homes southeast of Indianapolis.
