MEN'S GOLF: New lineup set for this weekend's match

The men's golf team will travel to Michigan this weekend with its first lineup change in nine tournaments.

Austin Steele earned a spot in the top five and will replace Wayne Denger. It is the first time the Cardinals won't have Denger, Brandon Boomsma, Andy Skillman, C.D. Hockersmith and Patrick Wilkes-Krier since September of this past year.

Coach Mike Fleck said Steele earned the spot through a couple of factors that included qualifying rounds this past week and play during the spring season.

"Basically from Butler, where Austin played as in individual, to the last few weeks, he has been consistent," Fleck said. "I think he has earned the spot. He has been playing good golf."

Steele shot a 75 at the Butler Invitational to finish in a tie for ninth place. He also competed as an individual at the Marshall Invitational two weeks ago, finishing tied for 50th (80-74-73).

"I think things are starting to go well for me," Steele said. "I'm trying to remain consistent and trying to be competitive the last month or so. I'm playing fairly well, and Coach has kind of realized that and has given me the opportunity to prove myself."

Wilkes-Krier tied for eighth this past week at the Kepler Intercollegiate and earned Mid-American Conference Player of the Week honors.

Steele said his goal this weekend is to keep the ball in play off the tee and produce for the team.

"I want to play well enough that the team can use my score all three rounds," Steele said.
