Dear Editor,
A piece of legislation I have been working on for more than a year now - both as a senator and after my term expired - has been tabled in the Undergraduate Education Committee. This piece, titled Dead Week, has been covered by the Daily News in several articles.
I would not complain about this result except for the fact that neither of the student representatives bothered to show up to our meeting.
The student body only has two representatives on this particular University Senate committee: These people, Steve Geraci and Asher Lisec, were voted into the positions with the understanding that they would represent student interests. Decisions made in this committee can potentially affect every student who either attends Ball State University now or will attend Ball State in the future.
I think it is particularly shameful that they both missed this meeting because it has been scheduled since the beginning of the school year.
Both these people have been senators and both were in attendance when this piece of legislation was passed through Student Senate. As I recall, both voted in favor of passing it, as well.
In addition to these facts, both have served as president of the student body.
What kind of example are they setting for a student body that is already seen as being apathetic?
There is one additional detail I feel cannot be left out: Arthur Hafner, dean of the University Libraries, was in attendance to support the Dead Week legislation.
Speaking from experience, legislation is hard to write and pass. When a piece of legislation receives faculty support, it makes it that much stronger.
The Student Government Association might not be able to garner such respect from faculty in the future because of what happened Monday.
