Ball State University freshman Maurice Acker has signed a scholarship letter of agreement to transfer and play basketball for Marquette University, according to Marquette's Web site.
The Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year will have three years of eligibility remaining in his college career, but he will not be available for game competition until the 2007-08 season. Acker received permission from Ball State to look at offers from other schools this week.
Last week, Acker said he was waiting until Ball State hired a new coach to make his decision about transferring. Ball State coach Ronny Thompson met with players Tuesday to discuss the future of the team, and Acker said Tuesday night that he didn't attend the meeting. Acker also said he was still planning to talk with Thompson in the near future, but he didn't comment on the transfer to Marquette.
In a statement released on Marquette's athletics Web site, Acker said he is excited to be a part of the Marquette basketball program.
Marquette's coach, Tom Crean, has been at Marquette for seven seasons. Crean said in the press release he is anxious to watch Acker reach his potential at the school.
"[Maurice is] an unbelievable competitor and effective floor leader," Crean said. "Maurice displayed the ability to produce in high school and in his first season at Ball State."
Acker will join former high school teammate Jerel McNeal at Marquette.
