The Ball State University debate team placed third in this year's National Educational Debate Association's National Tournament.
The top winners at the University of Dayton from March 31 to April 1 included Ian Flores, top speaker in the varsity division and one of three debate team All-Americans; Jane Ren and Melissa Sokolski, second in the novice division; Craig Butterfield, second for debaters competing at their first tournament; and Sarah Marty, third for debaters competing at their first tournament.
In addition, Flores and Becky Tucker were honored as semifinalists in the varsity division, while Butterfield and Franklin Hines were quarterfinalists in the novice division. Karen Broo and Sarah Roberts tied for fifth place for debaters competing at their first tournament.
"I think it was good," said Flores, a political science major and the only senior who participated this year. "We had a lot of good seniors last year and had a lot of new blood coming in this year to revitalize the team, and I think it's looking good for the future."
Ball State's team has won consistently during the past 15 years, with a championship last year and a two-person championship two years ago.
