BASES EMPTY GRAND SLAM: Lacrosse investigation taints Duke's reputation

Evidently the earth is flat, and we're back in the times of pillaging and plunder. Without going so far as to say we live in a society of cavemen (because they're still around), there seems to be a growing problem with sexual exploitation and abuse among athletes.

With a lack of respect for women and for themselves, these athletes are slowly losing their status as role models for younger generations.

According to espn.com, Duke University's varsity lacrosse team was suspended March 27 until a clear resolution of legalities for its players. On March 13, the team had a private party at an off-campus house for a large number of players. The party included free-flowing alcohol and two exotic dancers. One of the dancers told police she and a friend went to the party and were pulled into the bathroom only to be beaten, choked and raped, according to espn.com.

The Blue Devils were pre-season No. 1 and a title contender. Now they are only contending for justice and freedom. With a 6-2 record before the suspension, the team won't play again until the investigation is complete.

The dancer who came forward, as reported by espn.com, said three men beat, choked and raped her in the bathroom of the house where the party was. Forty-six of the team's 47 players were cheek-swabbed for DNA comparison. The final player avoided the test because the woman said the players were white, and the player is black.

The story doesn't stop for the Blue Devils, nor will things get easier soon. During the suspension, the team has dropped from No. 2 to No. 9 in the national ranking. Trumping that, other players on the team could be charged for not stopping the rape. Durham residents have protested, and demonstrations have begun around campus and in front of the party house. The roster on the Blue Devil's Web site, goduke.com, has been removed as this investigation continues.

This taints a highly respected institution and raises questions about racism. The three players allegedly involved are white, while the victim is black. This tightens tension in a town populated by an even number of black and white people who are, generally speaking, poor.

As the case continues and questions are answered, student athletes and coaches (as well as mere mortals), can all learn a little from the demoralization of Duke. It's a stain on athletics, it's a stain on collegiate institutions, and it's a stain on humanity. Grow up boys, grow up.
