WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals endure tough opening in MAC

After a layoff of more than two weeks, the Ball State University women's tennis team may have been too well-rested. The Cardinals (6-8, 0-2 Mid-American Conference) opened up conference play this past weekend by falling to Toledo 4-3 and Eastern Michigan 6-1.

"It was not a very good weekend," coach Kathy Bull said. "It's one of the toughest ones I've put in, in about 15 years."

On Friday against Toledo, it came down to the final match, a three-hour marathon between BSU's Jessica Thompson and Toledo's Myriam Cueva. In the third set, Cueva took a 4-1 lead before Thompson tied it at four, but Cueva won the final two games and the match for Toledo.

In the 6-1 loss to Eastern Michigan, everyone but Thompson had to move up a spot in the order because of the back injury to No. 2 singles Stephanie Farrar. She was happy with the play of Thompson and Owens, said Bull.

"My two older players, they're playing hard," she said. "They got their head on straight. They need their supporting cast to step up."
