The Ball State University women's tennis team isn't used to starting matches at 8:30 p.m., but it was no problem for the Cardinals on Wednesday night, as they defeated Cincinnati 6-1.
"It was a very intense, heated match," coach Kathy Bull said. "They were a feisty team and they really lived up to their reputation. They only had one umpire and there was just a lot of controversial line calls."
The Bearcats played tough in doubles, battling the No. 1 team of Jessica Thompson and Haly Calderwood until the end, where the Cardinals pulled through with an 8-6 win. The No. 2 team of Stephanie Farrar and Katie Owens cruised to and 8-4 win, but the Bearcats won a match in the No. 3 slot, defeating Rachel Lemar and Jennifer Pollack 9-8.
The only Cardinal to lose in singles play was Calderwood, who suffered a 6-3, 6-3 defeat.
"In singles, we played some really good first sets and controlled the courts throughout," Bull said. "It was a good challenge for us and it threw us off for awhile but we came through for it being that late at night."
SPRING BREAK
Ball State will continue their tour through the South during Spring Break, as they will take on Tennessee-Martin and Arkansas State.
"We see those teams in the fall," Bull said. "They are good programs. Both coaches are seasoned coaches and they bring in some really good kids. They only play outdoor tennis down there, and our biggest goal is to get accustomed to getting outside."
