TRACK AND FIELD:Cards get last chance at NCAA nationals

Teams' members travel to Notre Dame to qualify for NCAA's

This weekend a couple of Cardinals will get one last chance to qualify for indoor track and field nationals prior to Spring Break.

Throughout the season, sophomore Amber Williams and junior Terri Abraham have been setting themselves up for a chance to qualify for the NCAA indoor national championships. After hitting the NCAA provisional qualifying marks in their respective events at numerous meets, the duo will now travel to Notre Dame for the Alex Wilson Invitational on March 3-4.

Although she feels worn out from the busy track season thus far, Abraham says she has confidence for this weekend.

"I feel a little dead from the season," Abraham said. "I think I can hit the mark, I've been hitting it but scratched all season but hopefully I'll be able to this weekend."

Abraham also added that she has to go in with the right mindset or there's no point in competing.

"I've got to be confident, I guess there's no other way," Abraham added. "If I'm not I might as well go home."

Along with Abraham and Williams, Jill Scully and Jennifer McCoy were named to the All-Mid-American Conference team following last weekend's second place finish. Scully, who defended her titles in the 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter and finished runner-up in the mile, was garnered with All-MAC first team honors as well as being named "Most Outstanding Track Performer." Making the transition to the outdoor season is now the focus for the majority of the women's track and field team. Following the Alex Wilson invitational that begins today and the NCAA indoor national championships March 10-11, the Cardinals will get a small break prior to the first meet of the outdoor season on March 25.

Coach Sue Parks said the focus now is to rest and that although the indoor season was successful, it is still too early to get a grasp on how the outdoor season will compare.

"Right now it's really too early to tell where we are going to be when the outdoor season picks up," Parks said. "We've got a few more we need to get healthy. But coming up, it's a whole new season."
