A semester-worth of hard work paid off for two Ball State University students who won two awards at the Regional Addy Awards.
Jon-Tyler Core, a junior telecommunications major, and Bobby Richards, a senior theater major, received the Gold Award and Student Overall Best-of-Show for their promotional DVD for Reflex, an improvisational/sketch comedy troupe at Ball State.
"I think the reason this was so good was because we did it for ourselves," Richards said, "Everything is original, even the music is original."
Students compete for the Addy Awards at the local, regional and national levels. As the largest advertising competition in the nation, the Addy Awards recognize excellence in advertising among students and professionals. After both local and regional success, the DVD created by Core and Richards will be judged at the national level June 11 and 12.
Richards and Core worked on the project during the Fall Semester as an independent study with John Dailey, associate professor in the multimedia department.
"He was our go-to guy," Core said, "He helped us out a lot."
The DVD, "Reflex: The Funny Years," is a collection of performances by the comedy troupe.
The concept for the DVD originated from Richards and Jamie Grant, another member of Reflex.
"It was our goal to make an ultimate collection of all our videos," Richards said.
Core was able to use the project for his TCOM 350 class where adjunct faculty member Jason Higgs urged him to enter it into the local Addy Awards. For Richards, the project was his senior capstone, or final project.
"I spent time molding the DVD," Core said. "Bobby pumped out the video."
Core said the two spent a lot of time completing the project.
"We worked on this every day from early October until the very last day of the semester." Richards said, "When we already had the A, we still wanted it to be perfect."
Advertising agencies from Chicago and New York have since taken interest in Core and Richards, they said.
