SOFTBALL: Ball State leaves for doubleheader in Louisville

Cards currently have three players batting above .500

The Ball State University softball team will continue its 13-game trip away from home tomorrow afternoon as it will be traveling to Louisville, Ky., to play against IUPUI (1-3) and Bellarmine (2-4). Getting the start on the mound against IUPUI will be sophomore Amanda Pick (1-0).-áIn Pick's only other start this season she pitched a complete game four-hitter and struck out four in a 6-2 win over Evansville University (8-3).-á

In their one previous meeting earlier this school year at the Purdue Invitational, Ball State defeat IUPUI 3-2. For Cardinals coach Terri Laux, that win has little relevance to tomorrow's game.-á

"A lot of changes can happen in five months, both individually and team wise," Laux said.

Following the IUPUI game, Ball State will play Bellarmine.-áCurrently the Knights enter tomorrow on a two game losing and have been outscored this season 38-19.-á

Starting for the Cardinals against Bellarmine will be senior Quincy Duran (0-1).-áLast weekend Duran pitched six innings in a 1-7 loss to Mississippi University (4-10), as she allowed six earned runs on 10 hits.-á

"Quincy is a strong minded individual and she knows that she can throw better then she did her last time out," Laux said.-á "She was little fatigued entering Sunday's game because she was in the bullpen for both of Saturday's games." -á

With Thursday's games being used as a tune-up for the Fresno State Tournament, it is possible that freshman pitchers Laura Masch or Abby Zollman could make their collegiate debut tomorrow in relief of either Duran or Pick.-á

"We have to get our two freshman pitchers some time on the mound before we head of to California," Laux said.-áMasch played her high school softball in Texas where she finished her senior season with 0.43 ERA, 14 shutouts and 363 strikeouts, while Zollman during her senior year had a 0.38 ERA, 13 shutouts and 274 strikeouts.-á

Currently second baseman Amanda Pick, catcher Abby Gross and first baseman Katie Pilger all have a season batting average over .500, and have combined for 10 of the team's 11 runs last weekend.-á

"We have the same people in our line-up this year that we did last year and there is the same potential," Laux said. "We have the capability to do well offensively this year.-áLast season we just didn't get it done."
