MEN'S SWIMMING: Cards head to MAC tourney

Month-long wait not a concern for head coaches

It's been almost a month since the Ball State University men's swimming and diving teams concluded their regular season of competition with a tie against Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.-á However, the team now finds itself back in Athens, Ohio, for the Mid-American Conference Championships.-á

The three-day contest starts on Thursday and ends on Saturday. Preliminary rounds will start at noon to determine which swimmers will get to return to the pool at 7 p.m. for the finals. -á

"In the morning, you're going for times and place," co-coach Bob Thomas said. "At night, you get out and race."-á

Both co-coaches Thomas and Laura Seibold-Caudill said the meet should be highly competitive and will take a team effort for placing, along with senior leadership and experience to carry the team through the three days.-á

"We're going to be relying a lot on our senior class, because I think our senior class is where our strength is right now," Seibold-Caudill said.-á

The team's six seniors are Josh Schum, Kurtis Leer, Dustin Fulkerson, Jim Lullo, Robert Funk and captain Ritchie Caudill. All of the seniors, along with nine of their teammates, rank in the top 16 in the MAC with their regular season times in 20 different events.-á

"My goal for every senior is to walk away from this meet and be very pleased, happy and proud of their performance, and I really think that everyone of these seniors is capable of doing that," Seibold-Caudill said. "They've had a good career at Ball State, and there's no reason why not to end it with a good meet."
