The Ball State University men's golf team placed ninth out of 15 teams in Florida at the Orange County National Xavier Invitational over Spring Break.
Brandon Boomsma led the Cardinals with a final-round 68 and tied for 23rd finish. Patrick Wilkes-Krier and Wayne Denger tied for 38th, while C.D. Hockersmith (tied for 43rd) and Andy Skillman (tied for 53rd) rounded out the Cardinals lineup.
Coach Mike Fleck said the team struggled with the competition aspect of playing.
"I'd like to see us come out with a little more competitive mind set," he said. "Obviously we need to be ready to face conditions and challenges we deal with during the rounds. We haven't played for four months, so it's kind of hard to get the competitive juices flowing again."
Ball State shot an 878 total for the three-round tournament. The Cards finished above two Mid-American Conference schools (Marshall and Ohio) and beat two Big Ten schools (Wisconsin and Penn State).
Lamar won the tournament with a 31-under par score of 833 and host Xavier finished second.
