During the spring season, the men's golf team will get the chance to play on very prestigious golf courses. Ball State University gets its first chance to play one of these well-known courses on Sunday when it plays Pinehurst No. 8.
The Pinehurst Resort, located in North Carolina, has eight courses. Course No. 2 is the most famous, having hosted the 1999 and 2005 U.S. Open.
"It's going to be a great opportunity," coach Mike Fleck said. "It's a very special area. For these guys to play number 8 and get to experience Pinehurst, it's going to be pretty special."
Ball State will play at other esteemed courses this season such as Muirfield Village Golf Club, Firestone Country Club and the Brickyard Crossing Golf Club.
After finishing ninth out of 15 teams in Florida during Spring Break, the Cardinals will be up against more difficult competition this weekend. Five Big Ten schools are among the 16-team field.
"It's going to be a good competitive field," Fleck said. "It may be one of the most competitive fields top to bottom we will face this season."
Senior Brandon Boomsma led Ball State in its first tournament by tying for 23rd. He fired a final-round 68 and was the only player on the team to break 70 for the tournament.
The Cardinals have tried to stay active during their two-week break in competition, Fleck said.
"The two things I'd like to see is for us to continue to improve and get a little sharper with our physical game when we're out on the course, and also how we approach things mentally," Fleck said. "If we can continue to handle those things and focus on improving, we should be where we want to be."
