MEN'S BASKETBALL: Acker named Freshman of the Year

Point guard became starter after Stovall's injury

After starting the season as a backup to Ball State University's top player, freshman Maurice Acker never expected to get the chances he's had this season.

With junior Peyton Stovall's ACL injury opening up the starting point guard spot, Acker was thrown into the lineup and he flourished.

Acker was awarded for his efforts this season when he was named the Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year on Monday.

The 5-foot-8 guard became the fourth player in Ball State history to win the honor, joining an elite club with former Cardinals Ray McCallum, Bonzi Wells and Theron Smith.

"I'm excited," Acker said in a press release. "It's a great honor to win this award, especially to have my name listed with Ray, Bonzi and Theron. It's also a credit to my coaches and my teammates."

Acker started in 24 games this season while averaging nine points and more than four assists per game. He scored a season-high 23 points against MAC Champion Kent State on Jan. 11 and dished out a season-high 10 assists against Buffalo on Jan. 18.

Acker, who scored in double-figures 11 times this year, was also named to the MAC All-Freshman Team.
