LETTERS: Buckley could teach Gora lessons in classy behavior

Dear Editor,

This letter is written in response to the recent redesignation of men's basketball coach Tim Buckley.

Let's not have a short memory here, Cardinal fans and friends - Buckley can coach.

This year's team went without Peyton Stovall due to injury.

Buckley had Maurice Acker step in and do a great job in a tough position at point guard when he would have been apprenticing for a year or two under Stovall.

With Stovall, this year's team could have been 18-10 and able to compete for the Mid-American Conference tourney championship.

Let's not forget, a short time ago Buckley's team was beating national powerhouses, was rated in the top 20 and was turning out some neat graduates.

This brought positive national exposure to Ball State University.

In contrast, we have President Jo Ann Gora making cold television commercials that portray her as the university, as well as being involved with the athletic director on major decisions before they barely step off their respective cross-country planes.

Her negative comments after the coaching change was made were poorly thought out and just plain wrong. She also had her husband shoot free throws in a half-time competition normally reserved for students.

I hope Gora can see an example of class in Buckley and her predecessor, President John E. Worthen.

This is a great Midwestern university that was doing great things well before the new president and athletic director came.

It's a university that gives a person a chance and some support before making big decisions on his or her future.
