LETTERS: Ball State ACLU encourages organization's political action

Dear Editor,

It was unfortunate to read about the incident on Monday in which the police asked a group of Ball State University students to take down their banner.

While the police might have been technically within their rights in asking for the removal, we should be asking ourselves why these rules exist on campus in the first place.

A college campus should be a place of constant discussion and action. The negative effects of regulating speech and hampering the marketplace of ideas outweigh any supposed benefits.

We need to rethink many of these unnecessary and selectively enforced rules and start encouraging active engagement from students of all political persuasions.
