Burkhardt Building evacuated

Students evacuated Burkhardt Building this morning after areas on campus began smelling like gas.

Jim Clevenger, battalion chief at the Muncie Fire Department, said people in Teachers College and Bracken Library also complained about the gas smell. However, Burkhardt Building was the only place to register high enough gas level readings to consider an evacuation.

Clevenger said the origin of the odor is still unknown. Upon hearing the complaint, the Muncie Fire Department and local gas companies began searching for the source of the gas. They checked local construction sites and the propane tank near Burkhardt.

The problem appears to be somewhere off campus, though, Clevenger said.

The gas companies will continue looking for the gas leak, Clevenger said.
