WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Douglas leads Ball State to win

Junior guard finding role with team

It appears Stephanie Douglas may have found her role on the women's basketball team.

Douglas, a junior-college transfer from Meridian Community College in Miss., scored a career-high 14 points in leading Ball State University to a 57-47 win over Central Michigan on Saturday.

"She's definitely understanding, defensively especially, our system," coach Tracy Roller said. "She is finding a place on our team for sure."

Douglas scored a then career-best 12 points at Western Michigan on Wednesday only to break that mark against the Chippewas on Saturday. She was 4-of-14 shooting, but had four rebounds, four steals and three assists.

"I'm just doing it right now," Douglas said. "I figured I would just come out and try to build on what I did previously."

Douglas averaged 16 points, six rebounds and two steals last season for Meridian. Now at the midpoint of this season, Douglas is learning what her role is for the Cardinals.

"I'm starting to get accustomed to everybody and how everything works," Douglas said. "I've been at four schools in three years, so different kind of coaches operate differently. I'm starting to get accustomed to Tracy."

Ball State (9-5, 2-1 Mid-American Conference) committed 24 turnovers, yet forced the Chippewas into just three less. Every Cardinal who saw action committed at least one turnover.

"I think it was just sloppy play," said Lisa Rusche, who tied a career-high with six points and had three turnovers. "We had a lot of turnovers at both ends. I think we just had more heart."

Central Michigan (9-5, 0-3 MAC) made just six field goals and shot 25 percent in the second half. The Chippewas never got closer than six points after the 15:41 mark.

"We did what we had to do to win that one," Roller said. "I never felt comfortable at all ever during that game. We just kept hanging on and trying to keep the lead as much as we could."

Ann Scufca led the Chippewas with 11 points.
