KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Despite facing a 12-point second-half deficit, the women's basketball team came away with an 81-70 win at Western Michigan on Wednesday.
Tina Bolte scored a game-high 22 points and Stephanie Douglas scored a career-best 12 points.
"I'm just really proud of this team," head coach Tracy Roller said. "This is a tough place to play, we were in a big hole. We just hung tight, stayed together and played hard. And we finally got something out of it."
Amanda Parker hit three straight 3-pointers midway through the second-half, giving Western Michigan (4-9, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) its largest lead at 49-37.
But the Cardinals chipped away. Bolte hit back-to-back trifectas, pulling the Cards to within seven points.
"We knew that the time was then - it was time to make a run," Bolte said. "We never got down on ourselves. I don't think that it really phased us."
Douglas scored four quick points inside and a Bolte jumper with 4:38 remaining gave Ball State its first lead at 61-60 since early in the first half.
"We just never stop, we never give up," Douglas said. "We're the type of team that if we get down, it doesn't matter because we will come back."
The Cardinals (8-5, 1-1 MAC) pulled away in the closing minutes by icing the game at the free-throw line. Ball State connected on 17-of-18 attempts in the second half.
Douglas said she played more focused as it was the first game since her grandfather passed away.
"I just came out tonight and gave it my best," Douglas said. "I really dedicate this game to my grandfather."
The Cardinals started strong early in the game with an 11-6 lead. However, Western Michigan went on a 15-2 run midway through the half and led 31-25 at halftime.
All but five of the Broncos first-half points came from Carrie Moore, Lindsey Brown and Casey Rost.
Moore led the Broncos with 19 points and nine rebounds.
Kelsey Corbin (14) and Krista Stewart (11) also scored in double-digits for the Cards.
