As the women's indoor track and field team gets ready for its first challenge of the year against opposing schools and clubs, feelings of optimism and anticipation are prevalent across the board.
The Cardinals open their indoor season tonight at the Ball State Field Sports Building in the annual Ball State Open. Throwing events are set to begin at 5:15 p.m. with the running portion taking off at around 6:45.
Competitors for the open include the University of Dayton and IPFW, as well the Middlebury and Cadet Track Clubs. All the teams are set to be very evenly matched but the main goal seems to be getting the experience of a real meet completed.
"Right now we just want to get a meet under our belts," head coach Sue Parks said. "This will give us some output upon what we need to work on, as well as realize where we are at this point of the season."
The meet tonight will be the first challenge for the Cardinals since Dec. 9 when they had an inter-squad meet followed by the Ball State Pentathlon on December 10. Following the meet on Friday, the team gets set to travel to Bowling Green, Ohio for the Bowling Green Triangular on Jan. 20. These events are part of the indoor track and field season which wraps up March 10-11 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, at the NCAA indoor championship.
The open is not to be scored but merely set up as a stepping stone into the bigger challenges to come. It is put together to give the freshman and other underclassmen a glimpse at what is to follow in the weeks and months ahead.
"We really are just going to use this meet as a starting point," Parks said. "We just want to get out there, get a meet done, get some marks down and hopefully see some improvements."
