MEN'S TENNIS: BSU starts season with high expectations

It will be difficult for the men's tennis team to improve on last year's outstanding season, but it has a chance to do just that.

Ball State University finished last season 20-9 and a perfect 5-0 in conference play to win the Mid-American Conference regular season title. The Cardinals also won the MAC Tournament to secure themselves a birth in the NCAA tournament.

Coach Bill Richards believes his squad this season is as competitive as ever and is poised to have another quality year, although he mentioned he was not exactly sure what to expect.

"We have a lot of unknowns at this point," Richards said.

The Cardinals start the season with three straight home matches. The season opens today at 1 p.m. against Wright State. The Cardinals host IUPUI on Friday before wrapping up the weekend on Sunday against Northwestern.

Ball State enters the year with the goal of winning the MAC again, but Richards still feels a win in an NCAA tournament match would really aid the program.

"[A win in the NCAA tournament] takes the program to another level," Richards said. "It's not an easy thing to do."
