Coach Tim Buckley is searching for scoring.
Whether those points come from frontcourt or backcourt players makes no difference. All Buckley wants is a combination of his men's basketball players to begin making up for the 17 points-per-game that junior Peyton Stovall took with him while recovering from ACL surgery.
It's now been two consecutive games when the team has let its opponents sneak back into and ultimately win games after the Cardinals have gone scoreless during eight and six-minute stretches. Buckley said the team needs a better balance in scoring heading into tonight's game at Kent State University (8-5 overall, 2-0 Mid-American Conference).
"I think it's got to be balanced between our big guys, and it's got to be balanced among our perimeter guys that we rotate in," Buckley said. "We can't get outscored at positions. We've got to have at least be equal or close to equal."
Juniors Skip Mills and D'Andre Peyton are the only players who have scored in double-figures in the last three games. Mills is second in the MAC in scoring (20 ppg) and Peyton has shot 52 percent in those three games.
Peyton, who is playing his first season of Division I basketball after transferring from Vincennes University, said he is finally getting acclimated to a higher level of playing.
"I thought I would make a faster adjustment," Peyton said. "I've always been a scorer and Skip needs the help so that's why I'm here."
Fellow junior-college transfer Chris Ames, has had a harder time fitting in. Ames has scored only 10 points in the past six games. He didn't take a single shot against Akron and Ohio.
"Chris will find his shot eventually just like I have," Peyton said. "We just have to work harder at getting a better balanced attack than we've had the last couple of games."
