Dear Editor,
The Daily News had some interesting comments in its Dec. 7 commentary about the need for students to have more internship opportunities locally. As a Ball State University alumnus, I found myself saying "YES!" as I read the ideas.
It's easy to recall my years on campus in the late '70s and early '80s when the same problem existed - not only for internships, but regular post-graduation jobs as well. At the time, it always felt like it was "them against us." I don't know how accurate my perception of reality was at the time, but the general consensus around campus was that Muncie residents viewed students as outsiders who could bring money into town but not as viable commodities that could contribute to the local job market.
Accurate or not, it deserves attention from both sides. Muncie business owners need to recognize the vast potential that lays right at their own doorstep as far as a well-trained, capable and certainly enthusiastic labor force is concerned. Students, be ready to give 'em your best shot and show local employers that Ball State students have the potential to be some of the best employees and interns available on the market anywhere.
Once both sides realize the value of the other, everyone stands to benefit.
