LETTERS: Athletics Department does not address real needs of program

Dear Editor,

So, Ball State is putting the squeeze on its fans of basketball? Some would say this day has been inevitable - and perhaps it is.

However, there is something to be said for public relations and timing. Something the current administrators of the Ball State University Intercollegiate Athletics Department wouldn't understand if their lives depended on it.

Let's look at just what Ball State has done for us to earn this hike in capital.

Ball State has had an embarrassing and costly textbook scandal, and they would like more of your money for this honor.

No one was disciplined for this except students: Joe Hernandez, Dave Land and Ken Brown all still have their jobs. And they would like more of your money for this honor. ...

Tim Buckley, since Ray McCallum's players left, has taken a fine program and run it into the ground. His teams - let's not be counting the Miracle in Maui, those were Ray's players - have established a clear pattern of mediocre play, blowing big leads, constant injuries, poor play from interior players and inability to hold double-digit leads.

The trend isn't changing. And they want more of your money for this honor.

Now, rather than trying to fill the stadium, they want to squeeze the piteous few who come to the games.

Certainly, we are the biggest home draw in the Mid-American Conference. However, this is Indiana. The arena is outstanding, yet it's hardly half full.

Many people would realize additional revenue by filling the stadium first - once it's FULL, that kind of demonstrates a DEMAND.

Ball State has wisely realized that with Hernandez, Land and Brown at the helm, that will never happen.

So naturally, the only recourse is to raise prices for the fans who will show up no matter what: Admit defeat and screw your best customers.

Who would run a business this way?

And will this really increase revenue? Not until there is a product on the floor that people will pay to see.
