The next goal for Ball State University's gymnastics team is to compete well at their first away meet. Even though they had the advantage of being at home for the first meet, it was hard to use because one of their top gymnasts wasn't there. Sophomore Brittany George was unable to participate due to a death in the family. The gymnasts and coach Lisa Simonton believe that having her back will strengthen the team.
"Now we are more unified," sophomore Erica Gilkerson said. "She's one of our main gymnasts, so having her back on the team will motivate us. Her outlook in the gym is very positive."
While the Cardinals are losing the advantage of being at home, there is more excitement with the return of George than apprehension about competing on the road.
The meet on Sunday is with Northern Illinois at 1 p.m. While Simonton knows the coach of the opposing team, there is little concern placed on what the opponent is doing.
"It's part of our plan," Simonton said. "It's not worrying about the opponent. I don't worry about what they do, how good they are or if they are struggling. It doesn't make a difference to me. It's not part of our game plan."
The team was surprised with the results of their first meet. They did better than they had expected. Now that the gymnasts have the core of their routine, they are working on details.-á
"We got through our first home meet," Simonton said. "Our next goal is to get through our first away meet; see how we travel, see how we feel as a team and figure out what we need to do and when we need to do it
