For the third consecutive year, WIPB Public Television at Ball State University provided live coverage of Gov. Mitch Daniels' 2006 State of the State Address for both commercial and public television stations across Indiana.
Gov. Daniels, who began his term in January 2005, gave his address Wednesday at 7 p.m. The governor's main topics included public education, health concerns, local government and transportation.
Alice Cheney, general manager at WIPB, said the station was chosen to do the coverage because one of the governor's staff is a Ball State University alumna.
"We were asked again this year to broadcast because of doing a good job last year," Cheney said.
WIPB received the confirmation to cover the address approximately one month ago, Keith Huffman, one of the producer/directors of WIPB, said. He said that because WIPB covered it the past couple of years, they were expecting to do it again for this address.
Bill Bryant, producer and director at WIPB, said a crew arrived at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the State House, where they did a walk-through of the building and continued to set up until 4 p.m.
"We worked with Gov. Daniels' office to see where the teleprompter was set up," Bryant said. "We set up three cameras and adjusted the angles to make sure they were correct. We also had the House audio relayed to the production truck where we are doing the producing of the address and uplinked the live feed to channel 20 for the viewers to watch."
Bryant said about 10 crew members from WIPB were at the State Capitol Wednesday for the address while crew members at Ball State helped to provide the production, engineering, and marketing aspects for the broadcast.
"This is a big job because of who we are doing it for," Bryant said. "We work to provide the best possible broadcast for the governor year in and year out. We have remote capabilities no other university in Indiana has."
Once the network broadcasts the signal, anyone can access it, Bryant said.
Despite working all day, Cheney said, the crew did some pre-planning but did not spend as much time preparing for the address this year because they were familiar with the building.
"Having the opportunity to broadcast the event for the second year in a row is a huge honor," Cheney said. "It is a big compliment to do this seeing how WIPB is small in comparison to other stations. Asking our station above all the others in Indiana speaks highly to our staff and our equipment."
