Fraternities seek recruits this week

Variety of events provide opportunities to meet brothers

Fraternities began spring recruitment Sunday and events will continue through the week.

Most fraternities hold open recruitment, and this week's events serve as an opportunity for interested students to meet fraternity brothers.

"We take as many quality men as are interested and participate in the recruitment," Sigma Chi fraternity President Bill Bradford said.

Grades are a major factor in the consideration of new initiates. The Interfraternity Council requires a 2.6 cumulative grade point average for new initiates who have been at Ball State for more than a year. Students who haven't been at Ball State University for two semesters are required to have a 2.5 high school cumulative GPA and a 2.4 GPA for their first semester.

Delta Tau Delta fraternity President Bob Rutherford said his fraternity looks for "good students first and good leaders second."

Each fraternity also looks for students who seem devoted to its values.

Fraternities also look for new initiates who are willing to fully commit.

"We're looking for somebody who's going to be devoted 100 percent and put back the qualities and standards we teach," Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity President Rob Horan said.

Events for some fraternities started Sunday and included watching football and socializing.

"We had a good group of guys come out," Bradford said.

Other recruitment events include cookouts, poker tournaments and alumni get-togethers.

Wednesday, FIJI fraternity will have a graduate night in which graduated brothers from Ball State's chapter or other chapters talk to potential brothers about their experiences with the fraternity.

Sigma Chi alumni will speak with potential members on Thursday, Bradford said.

"They come down, and they reflect back on their experience being a member of a fraternity," he said.

Though most fraternities don't have a set number of new initiates needed, they are excited to meet whoever is interested, FIJI President MartyMerkel said.

"We're looking forward to a good week of recruitment," he said.
