MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals receive invitation to play in Las Vegas tournament next season

The Ball State University men's basketball team will play in the Las Vegas Holiday Invitational in 2006. Ball State is the first of eight teams to be announced for the tournament.

The Cardinals will play a guaranteed four games during the tournament, including the first two games at Worthen Arena on Nov. 19 and 21. The team will then spend its Thanksgiving playing at the Valley View High School gymnasium in Las Vegas on Nov. 24 and 25.

Boston College won the 2005 Las Vegas Holiday Invitational with a 76-68 win over Oklahoma State. Other teams in the tournament included Buffalo, Detroit, TCU, Drake, Jackson State and Shawnee State.

Since the invitational is considered an exempt tournament by the NCAA, the four games will only count as one of the team's 27 games next season.

It will be the third exempt tournament Ball State has played in school history.

Ball State lost to No. 1 Duke in the title game of the Maui Invitational in 2001 after beating No. 3 Kansas, 93-91 and No. 4 UCLA, 91-73. Ball State also participated in the Top of the World Classic in Alaska in 2002, beating Jacksonville State and Nebraska and losing to Weber State.

The Cardinals have three other non-conference games lined up for the 2006-07 season. Ball State will play Indiana State at Worthen Arena while visiting Butler and Indiana.
