It's the end of the semester and time's up

Make Finals Week productive, plan for Spring Semester

Last-Minute Preparation

Don't stress out mentally or physically and avoid changing sleep patterns.

Map out your schedule for finals week.

Take frequent breaks to avoid burning yourself out.

Include physical activity and plan for healthy meals.

Don't overstudy for exams because you won't be able to retain the information well.

Avoid all-night study sessions because sleep will be the only thing on your mind the next day.

Don't vary your regular routine greatly and don't squander your time.

Helpful Study Techniques

Start studying three days before the test for at least an hour each time on a particular subject.

Talk to your professor and find out information about the test so you can form your own study test questions.

Find a partner or a group to study with to bounce ideas off of one another.

Cut down on research time by going straight to the library's reference desk and asking for help on lengthy, worrisome papers.

Use the library's databases to search for credible material instead of wading through thousands of hits on Google. Call, e-mail or have a live chat with a librarian through the library's Web site to save time www.bsu.edu/library, Compare your class notes, study guides and supplemental instruction materials with the textbook.

Get a good understanding of what the chapters are about and answer the questions at the end of each.

Work in reverse order from the freshest information to the least familiar.

Review the material the way that you learned it for reinforcement. JW

Treat the test like an enemy. Find out as much information as you can about it such as the format or multiple formats, the length and the worth of each question. You can then predict what will happen on test day.

Use short effective studying to help the information remain in your mind for longer periods of time.

Do not feel overloaded, and vary your study techniques by going to a study group, a study buddy or a Web site that talks about the material in a different format.

Tips for Taking the Test

Don't cram all night; it hurts your ability to take a test.

Know your grade in the class ahead of time so you know how much you need to study,

Think of the exam as a survey of knowledge instead of a final because it releases a huge emotional stress.

Go into the final with a calm frame of mind so you can think rationally.

Stay calm; it is key to avoiding psyching yourself out.

Don't look at your notes right before the test or talk about it to anyone; you can avoid increasing the stress on yourself.

What To Do Next Semester

If things didn't go the way you planned this semester, get a jump start on next semester by coming into the Learning Center the first week of classes.

Meet your professor at the beginning of the semester and review the syllabus. If you become worried, contact the Learning Center as soon as possible.
