Volunteers and Minnetrista put in more than 1,000 hours of work to prepare for the 11th Annual Enchanted Luminaria Walk at Minnetrista. The event runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and Saturday.
The event features live music, a maze and four exhibits in addition to the luminaria walk.
Two groups of volunteers include members from the Fiji fraternity and Alpha Phi sorority.
Mike Dunagan, fifth-year senior, organized Fiji's involvement with Minnetrista two springs ago. This is the second year the fraternity helped Minnetrista with the luminaries. He invited Alpha Phi to participate in the event.
The brothers, with Alpha Phi's help, spend two weekends plus the week of the event cutting jugs and filling bags with sand to make the luminaries. When it's time for the event, Fiji and Alpha Phi go around the Minnetrista campus at 4 p.m. and light 5,000 luminaries.
Alpha Phi president Haley Dewees, senior, said the weather may be cold, but she enjoyed volunteering for a project the community can see.
Dunagan said it was nice to create a bond in the community with Fiji and Alpha Phi.
"Being involved with Minnetrista is special to me and the brothers because we built the relationship with them where they can count on us, and we always show up and do a good job," he said. Fiji helped Minnetrista during the January ice storm, cleaning up the campus, he said.
"The work we get to do automatically gets to be seen in the community," he said. "We get to give back to the community in a very visual way."
