FOOTBALL: Three freshmen receive All-America honors

Three members of the Ball State University football team received College Football News Freshman All-America honors.

Punter Chris Miller was named to the First Team, linebacker Bryant Haines was named to the Second Team and running back B.J. Hill was named to the Third Team as a punt returner.

Earlier, Miller and Hill were named to the Rivals.com Freshman All-America Second Team.

Miller, who was named to the All-Mid-American Conference First Team, punted 68 times for 2,917 yards and ranked 11th in the nation with a 42.9 average, the fifth-best in Ball State history. He punted a career-long 60-yard punt twice, at Western Michigan on Oct. 8 and against Akron on Nov. 5. Against Bowling Green, he punted for 430 yards - the eighth-highest in a game in Cardinals history.

Haines, a redshirt freshman, led the team in total tackles (83), and he added seven tackles for loss, one sack, a forced fumble and one blocked punt. He finished with a career-high 16 tackles at Western Michgan and 11 against Toledo.

Hill returned 18 punts for 200 yards and one touchdown which came against Akron on a 54-yard return. He finished the regular season ranked 24th in the nation with an 11.1 return average. Offensively, he carried the ball 82 times for 420 yards and two touchdowns.
