SWIMMING: Ball State to host second annual invitational

The Ball State University men's and women's swimming and diving teams will defend their title against four other schools as they host the second annual Doug Coers Invitational this weekend.

Attending this year will be the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Baldwin-Wallace College, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, Valparaiso and Ball State.

"We run through the championship schedule which normally covers three days, but we cut it down to a day and a half." co-coach Bob Thomas said.

Last year the men's team earned most of the first place finishes for the meet. Adam Konopka, Jim Lullo and Kurtis Leer all return for the Cardinals as individual event champions.

For the women's team, Mary Brinkoetter, Brittany Sayler, Erin Johnson, Addison Del Rio and Michelle Huang are looking to repeat their placings or do better than what they posted last year.

"In this kind of a meet, depth plays a key factor," Thomas said. "We may not be able to go one-two, but it's all those people getting ninth-tenth-eleventh-twelth and so on that can add up to a lot of points."
