SWIMMING AND DIVING: Diving team helps women pull away

Cardinals win four events in men's team 145-96 loss to Miami

Ball State University's men's and women's swim teams competed this weekend, taking victory in the women's meet.

The early momentum for the women's swimming and diving meet seemed to favor Bowling Green, but the Cardinals overcame and won the meet by a final score of 195-105.

"We finally came through in the diving end, by winning both boards," co-coach Bob Thomas said.

Paige Vernasco won the one meter event by 0.82 points with a final score of 238.95. Stephanie Paul scored 244.40 points in the three meter event to win by 13.4 points.

The most action of the meet, however, came early with the second event of the day in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Freshman Meghan Patterson barely missed first place by 0.01 seconds. Patterson also had a second in the 500-yard freestyle and a third as a member of B team in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Brittany Sayler won three firstplace finishes in the meet. She took top honors in the 100-yard backstroke, the 200-yard backstroke and was a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay A team. She - along with Addison Del Rio, Erin Johnson and Michelle Huang - would have taken first in the 400-yard medley relay, but the team was disqualified after Johnson jumped in too soon, Thomas said.

Women's team captain and senior Abby Arnold finished first in the 50-yard freestyle event with a final time of 24.78 seconds. Teammates Ashley VanOsdol and Chelsea Anderson followed in second with a time of 24.90 seconds and fourth with a time of 25.26 seconds, respectively.

Del Rio finished first in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events. Teammates Rebekah Gingerich and Megan Ploetz placed second and third in the 200-yard breaststroke to sweep the event.

The men's swimming and diving teams had the tough task of beating Mid-American Conference rival Miami on Saturday, but fell short, 145-96.

"We did the best we could with the man power we had," co-coach Bob Thomas said. "Miami could have beaten us by a whole lot more, had they wanted to."

The men's 400-yard medley relay of Adam Konopka, Ryan Franklin, Ritchie Caudill, and Kurtis Leer started off by taking second place with a time of 3:35.48.

However, Miami started to show its team dominance in the meet in the next two events.

Miami swept both the 1,000-yard free and the 200-yard freestyle events. Kyle Hembree finished the 1,000-yard distance with a final time of 10:05.75 to place fourth and Jim Lullo finished the 200-yard event with a time of 1:48.41, which also gave him fourth place.

Konopka had two of the three first-place finishes for the team, winning in the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard backstroke, while Leer took third in the 100-yard freestyle event.

"We can use this meet as a measuring stick for the rest of the season," co-coach Laura Seibold-Caudill said.
