Students, faculty perform together

Annual event offers chance to showcase singing, acting groups

Ball State University students laughed and applauded Monday as faculty members Dwandra Lampkin and Wendy Mortimer stepped into the spotlight of Ball Gym's Korsgaard Dance Studio.

They were confident. They were bold. They were assertive as they joined six other students to perform the song "Big Spender" from the musical "Sweet Charity." The eight women approached a wooden railing on the center of the floor, tapping their feet sternly as some leaned on the rail.

"Hey, big spender!" the women sang. "Spend ... a little time with ... me!"

The performance was one of nine during the 29th Annual Faculty/Student Performance Hour, presented by the Department of Theatre and Dance. The hour provided a chance for faculty and students to work together, said junior Amber Rees, who performed during the number.

"I've come and watched it before, but I've never done it before," she said. "It was so much fun, especially with faculty members, just because you get to know them more on a personal level."

Sarah Mangelsdorf, director of dance, said the hour gave faculty and students a chance to work on an equal basis.

Rees said the show allowed students to perform more freely than they could in the classroom.

"The importance is just to have fun, and the fact of being able to perform with faculty or by themselves without pressure of class or grades," Rees said. "We get to see other students and faculty in a different light."
