Although the parking restriction signs are going up, residents between Oakwood and Wheeling avenues have about two weeks before the restrictions will be enforced.
The recently completed parking signs were put up over the weekend in the red zone north of Ball State University campus, but Building Commissioner Jerry Friend said they would not be enforced until after Thanksgiving. Flyers will be put on cars parked the area after the holiday weekend, and there will be a one week "grace period" before people begin receiving tickets, he said.
This will be the second of four zones surrounding campus to have parking restrictions. The enforcement began Oct. 13 for the yellow zone, east of campus.
"The streets are much cleaner, the area is much cleaner, congestion is much better," Friend said about the yellow zone.
Under the restrictions, permit holders may park all the time, but other vehicles are restricted to two-hour parking. Two hangtag passes are given to homeowners and one bumper sticker pass is given to rental property owners.
Despite an initial backlash from the community, Friend said the response had been good. He has only received two complaints and several compliments. He said he hoped enforcing the red zone parking restrictions would help with parking issues during sporting events.
"I know there's a lot of congestion during ball games," Friend said. "That's going to help people in those neighborhoods."
