Provost search takes a step forward

Ball State University's new search for a provost and vice president of academic affairs took a step forward Thursday with the first meeting of the search committee and search firm.

Baker-Parker Associates, the search firm selected by President Jo Ann Gora to conduct the second provost search, met with the search committee to determine the process by which the search will proceed, said O'Neal Smitherman, vice president of information technology and search committee chairman.

"It was really an organizational meeting in which we began to talk about how we would go forward," Smitherman said.

Several options were discussed on how the search might proceed, but no decisions were made, Smitherman said.

"We're still in the process of deciding what next steps we need to take," he said.

Overall, Smitherman said the search committee response to the firm was positive,

The committee is anticipating the search firm will be able to find applicants who would not have originally considered the provost position at Ball State, he said.

"We're advertising as well as the search firm's actually going out and pursuing potential candidates," Smitherman said, "and also, we wanted to ask everyone on campus if they have suggestions for candidates to send those suggestions on."

Applications have already been received in response to an ad that has been placed, he said., Hhowever, he did not know how many applications had been received.

While it hasn't been scheduled yet, he said, another meeting would be planned for December to make the final decision on the search process.
