In January, students living east of campus will have transportation practically from their doorsteps right to campus - saving them from trudging through the snow, ice, wind and whatever other miserable weather concoction might emerge.
The Muncie Indiana Transit System is offering a trial run for a bus route to serve residents living east of McKinley Avenue - both on and off campus. The route has been long awaited and much debated, but MITS is willing to give it a try for two months.
Students should, too.
MITS asked the university to assist in funding to make the route permanent, but the university has replied that $53,000 of assistance for a public transportation program is not feasible. The university has offered to assist through on-campus promotion - which is a fair contribution - but Ball State University will clearly not be providing financial assistance to MITS. And just the experimental route will cost more than $11,000.
That's where students come in.
Students who live east of campus and could benefit from a MITS bus taking them from their neighborhoods or residence halls to campus, get on the bus.
MITS requires more than 40 riders an hour to consider the route feasible for the company, since it receives subsidies from the government based on how many riders partake of its services. In other words, if you don't ride buses along this route in January and February, no one will be riding them - ever.
So, come January, grab your friends and show support for what MITS and the Mayor's Commission for Ball State Student Relations have put into action.
It took a lot of time, research and effort to put this service into place, and only your support will make it all worth it.
