OUR VIEW: A flowing success

Combined efforts of SGA, community show university's dedication to help others

Usually when decorated buses or trucks park in front of Pruis Hall, it's for a concert, comedian or other entertainment purpose. Monday and Tuesday, however, the red-and-white bus camped in front of Pruis Hall was there to save lives.

In two days, 307 students showed up to the blood drive jointly sponsored by the Student Government Association, Ball Memorial Hospital and the Indiana Blood Center. Overall, the event yielded 222 units of blood - each of which can save up to three lives.

The success of the blood drive shows what good things can come out of bringing university and community organizations together with a common purpose. Although SGA President Steve Geraci and some other SGA members were unable to make it to give blood, the overwhelming efforts by the association to advertise and organize the event and solicit donations contributed immeasurably to its success. Several SGA members were also on-hand to hand out prizes and assist donors through the process.

While this isn't the typical, policy-making role students expect SGA to fill, the organization's members showed why they're considered campus leaders - by working together to make things happen, for the benefit of the campus community.

The event was also made possible through the efforts of the always-dedicated staff of Ball Memorial Hospital and the Indiana Blood Center. But bringing state, local and campus leaders together for this blood drive was what set it apart and above other on-campus blood drives.

And beyond that, these three organizations gave the campus community an opportunity to show how giving it can be when it rallies behind a good cause.

From students to faculty members to university staff and even Muncie community members, this blood drive was a success because of the generosity of donors, who cared to take a break from classes and the busy university life to help save the life of someone they'll never meet - even if their only motivation was the free cookie.

Events like this blood drive show what this university community is made of: dedication, compassion and heart.
