The Ball State University men's volleyball team heads to New York and concludes its preseason play this weekend in back-to-back days of competitive volleyball.
On Saturday, the Cardinals will play against Penn State at Webster High School in Rochester, N.Y. Then on Sunday, the Cards will take part in a three-way tournament along with USC and Rutgers-Newark, at Eden High School in Eden, N.Y.
The Cardinals are looking to get back on track with their winning ways in this tournament. They have won two out of the last three years. Ball State plays host to Rutgers-Newark on Jan. 10, 2006 for the season opener, but are staying focused on this weekend as a test of their progress and improvement. Last week, the Cardinals completed a game four come-back to beat Ohio State in four games.
"Our focuses were our offensive blocking, we hit .419 compared to last season's average of .240 for the season and we blocked 17 balls in four games, which is more than four balls a game," Walton said. "So those are the things that hopefully we will see continue through this weekend's matches with Penn State, USC, and Rutgers-Newark."
Walton expects Penn State to be the toughest match of the weekend, but he doesn't think it would be an upset.
"If we pull out a win it's going to be an upset in a lot of people's eyes. Not mine," he said.
