LETTERS: Additions to football stadium not best option for improving Ball State Athletics Department

Dear Editor,As a May 2002 graduate - who was at Ball State University when the last stadium upgrade was completed - I really question why the stadium needs another upgrade.  The football team has certainly not improved and at the expense of improving minor sports. At what point does this university understand that the football team is not going to improve by adding seats to the stadium that can barely be filled up for one home game a year. ...The university would be much better served by aiding the teams that are successful year after year: The women's track team hosts an indoor meet every year. The team has no room for spectators or the athletes. The outdoor track could be a huge generator of revenue if more stands were put out there for the team to play host to an invitational or even the Mid-American Conference championships more often. Also, the swimming pool is outdated at best. MAC schools with far less money have up-to-date facilities, which translates into getting better athletes - what the coaches have done considering the outdated facilities is an achievement. And despite the success of the soccer team, it is playing on a field that's almost "off campus" with no stands for spectators to watch.I wish to see an explanation on the line of thinking that more seats will translate into a top-25 football team that is known by sports writers as the punching bag for the rest of the country and then cannot even compete in the MAC. Good luck with that one.Dan CarringtonAssistant scientist
