With enthusiasm and pride, the brothers of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity collected close to $200 for the homeless during their ninth annual "Sleepout 4 the Homeless" event Wednesday.
The fraternity started campaigning at 8 a.m., collecting money from people in cars and students on the way to class.
The group yelled "Don't hate, donate" and "You're going to class, we freezin' our ass" and other slogans to attract attention for their cause.
Sisters in the Zeta Phi Beta sorority also helped with the event.
"We support them in what they do and their efforts," Kyla Edwards, president of the Ball State University chapter, said.
She would try to stay out with the fraternity throughout the night, she said.
"It takes a lot of support and determination to stay out here," Edwards said.
Out of the 12 members in the Ball State's chapter of Phi Beta Sigma, 11 spent the night in the cold weather. The only person who did not join the group is at an internship.
"As long as we keep doing it every year, we be good," senior Danny Ball said.
Ball was the oldest person at the event and has participated in it for four years in a row.
"Each year has its own take out of it," Ball said. "One year we mainly get more clothing, this year we're getting more money."
James Johnson, vice president of Ball State's chapter of Phi Beta Sigma, said the money would go to Muncie Mission and the Red Cross. He said the fraternity liked working for the cause.
"It's a pleasure to be back," he said.
