CROSS COUNTRY: Cardinals travel to Bloomington for regionals

Coach hopes team makes top 10 against 34 schools in meet

The Ball State University cross country team is preparing to travel to Bloomington to compete in the Great Lakes Regional at the Indiana Cross Country Course on Saturday.

The Cardinals will be one of 34 schools at the Great Lakes Regional. Universities from Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin will be at the meet. Akron and Toledo, schools that the Cardinals lost to at the MAC Championships will be there as well.

Last year at the Great Lakes Regional, the Cardinals placed ninth at Eastern Michigan's Eagle Crest Golf Club. Coach Sue Parks is looking for the team to have a top-10 finish this year.

"Since this is a large meet, I want to see the team run smart and see what we can do against tough competition," Parks said.

Parks is proud of the successes of freshman Vanessa Gilbert and junior Rose Lehe this season. Lehe is gradually getting back in her groove and Gilbert has been running phenomenally all year, Parks said.

"Vanessa and Rose each have a good shot at making All Region-Top 25 on a good day," she said.

Michigan and Notre Dame are favorites heading into the contest. Parks also added that Butler, Indiana State and Marquette will be tough teams. The top two teams will advance to the NCAA Cross Country Championships at Terre Haute with automatic bids.

The race will begin at 12:15 p.m., following the men's race at 11:00 a.m.
