Caution: Wednesday night's Laugh Out Loud comedy contest may result in a busted gut, split side or a slapped knee due to dangerously high levels of humor.
The Laugh Out Loud stand-up comedy contest will give Ball State University students the opportunity to earn the title of Ball State's funniest person as well as a cash prize.
The competition, hosted by the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, will take place at Pruis Hall Wednesday at 8 p.m., with $3 tickets available at the door.
Ball State junior Jeff Lock came up with the idea for the Laugh Out Loud event and organized it through his fraternity Delta Tau Delta.
Lock, a two and a half year veteran of stand-up comedy, wanted to keep the event limited to Ball State students in order to showcase the comedic talents of fellow students.
"I thought it would be fun to see classmates up there doing stand-up comedy," Lock said.
Ben Dewhurst, a Ball State senior, will make his comedic debut at Laugh Out Loud.
Dewhurst, a cast member of Something Else T.V., said that he is excited about the opportunity to have an amateur stand-up opportunity in Muncie.
"I've done improv before and sketch, but I've never done stand-up," Dewhurst said.
The event is intended to have an amateur atmosphere, meaning that the crowd will be considerate to those who want to gain experience in stand-up comedy, Lock said.
"The first step is trying it," Lock said.
Dewhurst said that stand-up provides a major opportunity to young performers and that Ball State tends to not showcase it as much as other forms of comedy.
"Stand-up is a predominant part of our culture," Dewhurst said. "All of the big actors usually start from stand-up and it's something that we really don't see too much of at Ball State; we have improv comedy and sketch comedy, but we don't really have too much stand-up."
It has been fun preparing to take the stage Wednesday night, Dewhurst said.
"I'm looking forward to it, I mean I don't know if I'll be the best, but I don't think I'll be completely terrible," Dewhurst said.
In addition to the stand-up comedy competition, there will also be performances by the Ball State improv group Absolunacy and a sketch that will be filmed live by the local sketch comedy show Something Else T.V., Lock said.
Laugh Out Loud is a new concept to Ball State's campus, but the idea is that comedy fans will embrace it, Lock said.
"It's another outlet for people that enjoy comedy; watching it or actually being part of it."
