WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Obras named MAC Scholar Athlete

After setting the Ball State University women's volleyball record for kills and two conference records, senior Sarah Obras was named Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week.

The outside attacker broke the kills record (now 1,835) against Eastern Michigan by tipping the ball just past the Eagles' block to give Ball State a 28-18 advantage in the second set. She entered the match 10 kills behind previous record holder Megan Hammons (1,827 kills set from 1998 to 2001).

Obras also became the first player in MAC history to post more than 1,500 kills and 1,500 digs in a career during the first set and became the conference's all-time career attempts leader in the second game. She now has 5,274 career attempts.

She helped Ball State defeat Eastern Michigan, 3-1, when she broke the record. Ball State won both of its games over the weekend and beat Xavier on Tuesday.

The award is the first for Obras in her career. An accounting major, Obras has a 3.86 grade-point average.
